Urza's Sylex is a one-sided board wipe on a stick — tap it and sacrifice it to destroy all permanents with mana value equal to or less than the number of lands you control, which in a healthy game wipes most of the board while leaving your high-cost threats standing. The catch is the full-turn setup window: an opponent with cheap removal or a counterspell can strand the activation before it resolves.

Commander is where Urza's Sylex does its best work — games go long enough that you'll reliably have eight or more lands, which means the wipe hits nearly everything on the table while your top-end threats survive. It's a strong fit in green-based decks that ramp hard and want to clear the board without nuking their own five-drops. In Legacy and Vintage the activation cost is prohibitive; you're rarely untapping with this in a format where games end on turns three and four. Modern and Pioneer are similarly hostile — the two-mana activation plus a full turn of vulnerability is too slow against linear combo and aggressive decks, and better board control options exist at every price point.

Price Context
Current price
$0.71 bulk tier
At $0.71, Urza's Sylex sits firmly in bulk rare territory — fair pricing for a card that sees fringe Commander play but almost no competitive demand. It's unlikely to spike without a major reprint catalyst or Commander breakout, so pick it up cheaply now if it fits your build and don't expect significant movement in either direction.
