Urza's Rage

In Commander, Urza's Rage earns its slot in red decks that want unconditional reach — specifically anything that generates large amounts of mana, like Zirilan of the Claw or Neheb, the Eternal, where the kicker cost is routinely payable. Legacy and Vintage are formats where Urza's Rage is legal but irrelevant; a three-mana sorcery-speed spell dealing 3 damage competes against formats defined by turn-one and turn-two kills, and the kicker is simply never the plan. Modern is similarly hostile — the card sees no play there. Oathbreaker, where targeting the opposing planeswalker is a repeatable priority, is arguably the format where Urza's Rage is at its most focused: an uncounterable removal spell aimed directly at the win condition your opponents are protecting.
