Unmake exiles the target — no regeneration, no death triggers, no graveyard recursion — for three mana at instant speed. The triple-hybrid cost locks it into Orzhov and its allies, but in any deck that can cast it, Unmake is flat-out one of the cleanest answers in the format.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Unmake earns its reputation: exile removal at instant speed answers indestructible threats, Atraxa counters, and anything your opponent plans to reanimate, and the hybrid cost means any Orzhov, Esper, Mardu, or Abzan deck can run it without a second thought. In Pauper, Unmake is a staple — unconditional exile at common is rare, and the format's slower pace makes the three-mana ask reasonable. Legacy and Vintage have access to cheaper and more flexible answers, so Unmake doesn't see play there despite being legal. Modern has largely passed it by in favor of cheaper options like Solitude and Path to Exile, but the exile clause keeps it fringe-playable in budget builds that need the insurance.
