Ultros, Obnoxious Octopus card art
Ultros, Obnoxious Octopus puts a repeatable counter-distribution engine on the board — every end step, you're moving +1/+1 counters around and triggering abilities that care about them, all for three mana. The cost is that it demands a deck built to exploit those activations, which is exactly why it slots so cleanly next to Agatha's Soul Cauldron and why The Emperor of Palamecia runs it at a 12% clip.

The Emperor of Palamecia's payoffs scale on creatures with counters, and Ultros, Obnoxious Octopus functions as a free redistribution layer every end step — you're constantly fueling the engine without spending additional cards or mana.

Commander is the natural home for Ultros, Obnoxious Octopus — the longer the game, the more end-step triggers fire, and a 99-card singleton environment gives you the density of counter-synergy payoffs to make each activation matter. In competitive Constructed formats like Modern and Pioneer it's nearly unplayable: three mana for a 3/3 with a slow, incremental effect doesn't clear the bar when opponents are winning on turn three or four. Legacy and Vintage are the same story — the card simply doesn't move fast enough. Standard is the one constructed format where it could technically see fringe play in a dedicated counters shell, but it faces stiff competition from more efficient pieces.

Price Context

Current price

$0.10 bulk tier

At $0.10, Ultros, Obnoxious Octopus is pure bulk — you're picking it up for essentially nothing. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to climb unless a breakout counter-synergy commander drives it into widespread play.
