Trial of Knowledge draws you four cards and then asks you to discard three — net one card, for four mana at sorcery speed. That rate is too slow for competitive formats and too shallow for Commander, where draw engines need to sustain momentum, not tread water.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Trial of Knowledge is outclassed by every meaningful draw spell at the four-mana slot — Fact or Fiction offers more selection, and Harmonize draws three with no discard attached. In Legacy and Vintage, the formats move too fast for a sorcery-speed loot that costs four mana and replaces itself with only one net card. Pioneer and Modern have access to cleaner card selection at lower costs, leaving Trial of Knowledge with no realistic home. It is legal in Oathbreaker, but the same logic applies: you want draw that builds advantage, not redistributes your hand.

At $0.06, Trial of Knowledge is deep bulk — the price reflects honest demand. There is no meaningful pressure to drive it higher, and it will stay in the penny bin.
