Thrill of Possibility card art
Thrill of Possibility replaces itself at instant speed — you draw two and discard one on your opponent's end step, which is the whole game in graveyard and discard-matters shells. The cost is real: you're down a card net unless the discard is the point, so don't run it in decks that just want raw card advantage. The Beamtown Bullies makes the discard a feature, not a bug.

01
The Beamtown Bullies

The Beamtown Bullies

71.8% of decks · synergy 0.64

The Beamtown Bullies needs fatties in the graveyard to reanimate onto opponents' creatures, and Thrill of Possibility at instant speed lets you pitch a Blightsteel Colossus or Emrakul at the exact moment you want to trigger the Bullies — 72% of Bullies decks run it for exactly this reason.

02
Magar of the Magic Strings

Magar of the Magic Strings

72.4% of decks · synergy 0.54

Magar of the Magic Strings turns instants and sorceries in the graveyard into 3/3 copies, so Thrill of Possibility does double duty: it digs for the spells you want to recur while also putting itself in the bin as a recastable body.

03
Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

62.7% of decks · synergy 0.49

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge rewards you for casting spells on other players' turns, and Thrill of Possibility is a clean instant-speed trigger that also filters toward the Pirates and payoffs the deck needs.

04
Sauron, Lord of the Rings

Sauron, Lord of the Rings

60.4% of decks · synergy 0.49

Sauron, Lord of the Rings creates the Armies token whenever you discard, so Thrill of Possibility is essentially a two-mana draw-two that also pumps your board — the discard cost becomes a free resource.

05
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad

55.3% of decks · synergy 0.48

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad places experience counters when creatures with +1/+1 counters die, and Thrill of Possibility slots in as cheap instant-speed filtering to find the creatures and equipment that make the engine run.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

In Commander, Thrill of Possibility is a role-player rather than a staple — it earns its slot in discard-matters and graveyard strategies but is a liability in anything that just wants card parity. In Pauper, it competes directly with Faithless Looting's graveyard legacies and sees genuine play in Dredge-adjacent lists where the discard is the payoff. In Modern and Pioneer it's too slow against the format's tempo demands, and dedicated looting effects do the job cheaper or more efficiently. In Legacy and Vintage the bar for a two-mana sorcery-speed-adjacent effect is simply too high — even at instant speed, the raw rate doesn't compete. Standard legality gives it a home whenever graveyard synergies are in the format environment, though it cycles in and out of relevance depending on the block.

Price Context

Current price

$0.21 bulk tier

At $0.21, Thrill of Possibility is deep bulk — pick up copies without thinking about it. Bulk instants with broad legality across six formats don't tend to spike, so there's no urgency in either direction.
