Thopter Squadron card art
Thopter Squadron enters as a self-contained army — pay mana, make 1/1 flyers, reassemble them back into a bigger body whenever you want. The cost is real: the mana sink is slow and the base stats are unimpressive, so Thopter Squadron earns its slot only in decks that either abuse enter-the-battlefield triggers or scale the token count into something threatening. Stridehangar Automaton and Leonardo da Vinci are the commanders that make this click; everywhere else it's a backup plan at best.

Leonardo da Vinci rewards you for flooding the board with artifact tokens, and Thopter Squadron gives you a repeatable, on-demand source of them — crack the Squadron down to populate the battlefield, then rebuild when you need a flying blocker or a sacrifice outlet target.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Thopter Squadron actually belongs — the 100-card singleton format is slow enough that a six-mana creature with a built-in engine has time to generate value, and artifact-token strategies are thick with payoffs for every token produced. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but entirely outclassed; nothing in those formats gives a six-mana 3/3 the runway it needs, and faster, cheaper threats do the same job without the mana investment. Thopter Squadron is effectively a Commander card with legacy paperwork.

Price Context

Current price

$1.57 cheap tier

At $1.57, Thopter Squadron sits in the cheap tier — low enough that it's an easy pickup for any artifact or token build curious about the effect. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to spike unless a high-profile commander deck breaks the token-reassembly loop wide open.
