Thicket Elemental puts a free creature from your library onto the battlefield the turn it enters — at five mana, that's a reasonable rate when the thing you're cheating out is Avenger of Zendikar. The kicker cost makes it scalable, but the base body is a 4/4 for five with no evasion, so you're running this for the ability, full stop.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Thicket Elemental is a Commander card through and through — the singleton format rewards the variance of its dig effect, and five-mana creature slots in Commander can afford to do something splashy on entry. In Legacy and Vintage, where it's technically legal, a five-mana 4/4 that might cheat out another creature doesn't come close to competing with what those formats offer at the same cost. Oathbreaker gives it a slightly narrower home, but only in green creature-cheat shells where the effect is reliably hitting something worth the effort.

Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Thicket Elemental is deep bulk — easy to acquire as a throw-in or dime-bin pickup. Don't expect that price to move; the card has a narrow home and no spike potential.
