Sun Warriors enters tapped and attacks the turn after, but in Avatar Aang decks it's doing real work — it's one of the key pieces that enables the extra-combat loop with Hellkite Charger by generating the mana needed to retrigger the ability. This is a build-around card, not a generalist, and outside the Avatar block it rarely earns a slot.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy
Avatar Aang
Avatar Aang is the natural home for Sun Warriors — it's in nearly a third of all Aang decks because the Warriors' mana generation feeds directly into the extra-combat engine Aang wants to assemble.

Fire Lord Zuko
Fire Lord Zuko leans on Sun Warriors for the same reason: the mana production pairs with aggressive combat strategies, and Zuko's Bending synergies keep it relevant beyond the early game.

Sokka, Tenacious Tactician
Sokka, Tenacious Tactician includes Sun Warriors at nearly the same rate as Zuko, using the Warriors to fuel the wide, combat-focused gameplan Sokka rewards.

Iroh, Tea Master
Iroh, Tea Master runs Sun Warriors at a lower rate, but it still slots in as a mana accelerant that supports the value-oriented game Iroh plays.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Sun Warriors is legal in every major constructed format, but it isn't showing up in any of them outside Commander — the effect is too slow and too conditional for Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer, where the game is often decided before the Warriors can generate meaningful mana. In Standard it has the legality but not the power level to compete. Commander is the only format where Sun Warriors earns its slot, and even there it's almost exclusively an Avatar-themed build-around rather than a generic Boros staple.

$0.26 bulk tier
At $0.26, Sun Warriors is firmly bulk — easy to acquire without thinking about cost. Bulk rares with narrow synergy don't tend to climb unless the theme explodes in popularity, so grab it if you're building the deck and don't expect it to matter otherwise.
