Star Pupil enters with a +1/+1 counter and exists to be sacrificed — its entire value is as a counter-loaded body that other cards consume, most cleanly illustrated by Evolution Witness, which returns it from the graveyard to repeat the loop. Outside of dedicated counter-manipulation or sacrifice synergy, Star Pupil does nothing.

Star Pupil is a Commander card first and almost exclusively — it needs a critical mass of sacrifice outlets, counter doublers, or persist/undying interactions to justify a slot, and Commander is the only format that consistently assembles those engines. In Pauper it's legal but irrelevant; a 1/1 for one with a single counter doesn't compete with the format's efficient creatures. Modern and Pioneer have better one-drops at every angle, and Legacy doesn't look at Star Pupil twice. Commander is the one place where the right general — anything that rewards +1/+1 counters entering the battlefield or dying — makes Star Pupil a repeatable resource rather than a vanilla body.
