Squad Captain enters with +1/+1 counters equal to the number of other creatures you control, so in a populated board it's immediately a 5/5 or larger for four mana. Antler Skulkin it is not — this card earns its slot by scaling with your army rather than existing in spite of it.

Squad Captain is a zero-setup-required payoff in any go-wide Commander deck — the floor is embarrassing and the ceiling is a massive trampler that arrived without needing a combo. Outside Commander, it sees essentially no play: Pauper and Pioneer both have cheaper, more consistent threats, and Legacy or Vintage wouldn't glance at a four-mana vanilla-ceiling creature. The card's home is Commander, full stop, specifically in token and +1/+1 counter strategies where the board is already wide by turn four.

$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Squad Captain is deep bulk — pick it out of a commons box and never think about it again. Bulk creatures at this price rarely move unless they find a competitive home, and this one won't, so the price is stable for the same reason it's cheap: nobody needs more than a playset.
