Spreading Flames deals damage split however you choose across any number of targets — at six mana with six or more cards in hand, that's a legitimate sweeper that can dome multiple creatures or players at once. The hand-size requirement is the whole game; in a deck that can't maintain seven-plus cards, this is an expensive burn spell that underperforms.

Commander is where Spreading Flames actually lives — multiplayer means more targets, and high-hand-count commanders like Niv-Mizzet, Parun or Teferi's Puzzle Box builds can reliably unlock the full damage ceiling. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's a novelty at best; six mana is far too slow for those formats, and cheaper removal obsoletes it immediately. Vintage has the same problem at a higher power ceiling — you're not casting this when Pyroblast exists. Stick to Commander if Spreading Flames is on your radar.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Spreading Flames is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not the card. That price is stable because demand is narrow; it won't spike unless a high-profile hand-size commander pushes it into the spotlight.
