In Commander, Smiting Helix earns a slot in madness-enabling shells — Anje Falkenrath, Olivia Voldaren, and similar discard-heavy builds where the one-mana rate is live more often than not. Outside those decks, four mana for a 3-damage burn spell with lifegain is too slow to matter at a 100-card table. In Legacy and Vintage, the card sees essentially no play — those formats have access to Lightning Bolt and better, and the madness condition requires infrastructure that faster decks can't afford to build around. Modern is theoretically the most hospitable competitive format for Smiting Helix given the presence of Hollow One and Vengevine strategies, but even there it hasn't broken through as a staple.
