Skeletal Grimace gives a black creature +1/+1 and regeneration for two mana, then lets you pay one black to regenerate it again each turn — cheap insurance that keeps a key creature alive through board wipes and combat. It's narrow and slow enough that it rarely earns a slot over better auras or protection spells, but in dedicated regeneration-matters builds it does exactly what it says.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Skeletal Grimace is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but the only format where it sees any real play is Pauper, where common-only card pools make cheap recursive protection more valuable and the regeneration keyword has more structural relevance. In Commander, the effect is too small — a single +1/+1 and a mana-intensive regeneration shield rarely justifies a deck slot when you need every card to impact the board at scale. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage, the tempo cost of two mana for a conditional aura is disqualifying.

Price Context
Current price
$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Skeletal Grimace is deep bulk — you're paying almost nothing for the card itself. That price won't move; demand is too low and supply from the original print run is abundant.
