Sins of the Past lets you cast any instant or sorcery from your graveyard for free at end of turn — then exiles it along with the rest of your graveyard as the price. Six mana for a one-shot recursion spell is expensive, but the right target makes the cost irrelevant: any game-ending sorcery you've already cast once becomes a second bullet.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Sins of the Past earns its keep — the format's long games mean graveyards fill up with haymakers worth recasting, and a free Demonic Tutor or Torment of Hailfire off a six-mana investment can end the game on the spot. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but has no competitive home; the formats move too fast for a six-mana sorcery that requires a stocked graveyard, and both formats have access to far more efficient recursion. Oathbreaker offers a narrower window where its ceiling is highest in spell-focused builds, but even there it's fringe.

Price Context
Current price
$0.38 bulk tier
At $0.38, Sins of the Past is deep bulk — easy to acquire and easy to cut without financial pain. The price reflects its narrow application rather than any power ceiling issue; in the right shell this card overperforms its cost by a wide margin.
