Safeguard turns your largest creature into a damage shield for your life total — as long as it stays in play, opponents must pay its power in life to target you directly with anything. The effect is real but fragile: one removal spell collapses the whole protection.

Commander is the only format where Safeguard sees any meaningful play, and even there it sits at the fringe. Taxing opponents' life totals matters more in a four-player pod where resources are stretched, and enchanting a huge creature like a general voltron target can make combat math awkward for opponents. Legacy and Vintage are both legal formats, but neither has any reason to run a five-mana enchantment that folds to removal when faster, harder interaction dominates. Safeguard is a Commander-only consideration, full stop.
