Rune of Sustenance card art
Rune of Sustenance gives you a lifelink permanent and replaces itself with a card draw the turn it enters — two effects for one mana. That combination is rare enough at one mana that Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ decks run it at a 61% clip, and it earns its slot in any Aura-matters or lifegain shell.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ

Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ

61.0% of decks · synergy 0.59

Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ triggers off gaining life, and Rune of Sustenance turns every attack with an enchanted creature into an additional loyalty or draw trigger — at one mana, it's one of the cheapest ways to keep that engine firing.

02
Lyse Hext

Lyse Hext

25.9% of decks · synergy 0.25

Lyse Hext wants Auras stacking up on creatures, and Rune of Sustenance slots in as a free cantrip Aura that also drips life every time the enchanted creature connects.

03
Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice

Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice

22.9% of decks · synergy 0.21

Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice fetches an Aura of equal or lesser mana value whenever one enters on a creature, and Rune of Sustenance at one mana is the floor — cast it, draw a card, and immediately tutor up a bigger Aura to chain the engine.

04
Eriette, the Beguiler

Eriette, the Beguiler

20.9% of decks · synergy 0.20

Eriette, the Beguiler drains opponents for each enchanted creature you control, so Rune of Sustenance isn't just a cantrip — the lifelink it grants means you're gaining life back on top of the drain, pulling the life-total gap in two directions at once.

05
Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

18.3% of decks · synergy 0.16

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut cares about gaining life in chunks, and Rune of Sustenance converts every swing with an enchanted creature into fodder for that trigger while replacing itself the turn it lands.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Rune of Sustenance earns its reputation: Aura-matters commanders treat it as an unconditional one-mana cantrip that leaves a lifelink buff behind, which is a clean rate in a format full of battlefield-centric engines. Outside Commander, the card is legal in Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, but those formats have no interest — enchantment-based lifegain strategies don't exist at competitive levels there, and a one-mana Aura that draws a card isn't powerful enough to slot into any other shell. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's logic, so the same Aura-matters or lifegain planeswalker builds that want it in Commander want it there too.

Price Context

Current price

$0.39 bulk tier

At $0.39, Rune of Sustenance is bulk — pick up as many as you need without a second thought. Bulk commons with narrow homes don't appreciate, but this one won't get cheaper either, so there's no reason to wait if you're building into one of the Aura-matters or lifegain decks that actually want it.
