Roots locks a non-Wall creature out of combat for as long as you keep the enchantment on it — a soft removal effect that costs three mana and survives as an ongoing tax. It's narrow and fragile, but in the right shell it does real work.
Format Analysis

In Commander, Roots occupies a niche role as repeatable creature lockdown — useful in slower, pillow-fort or stax builds that want to neutralize a single threat indefinitely without spending removal. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but would never run it; one-for-one aura-based pacifism effects don't compete in those formats. Pauper is the most plausible competitive home, where tempo and creature-based strategies mean blanking an opponent's best attacker can actually matter. Roots won't show up in most Commander lists, but if your game plan is attrition and board control, it's a coherent inclusion.

Price Context
Current price
$0.04 bulk tier
At $0.04, Roots is deep bulk — you're paying essentially nothing for it, and that price is stable because demand is low across every format. It holds no financial upside, but as a functional piece for an aura-tribal or stax list, the cost-to-effect ratio is hard to argue with.
