Renegade Tactics card art
Renegade Tactics makes a creature unblockable and replaces itself with a card — the whole package costs one red mana. Outside of Zada, Hedron Grinder decks where it copies across an army and draws a fistful of cards, it's a narrow combat trick that rarely makes the cut.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Zada, Hedron Grinder

Zada, Hedron Grinder

80.4% of decks · synergy 0.74

Renegade Tactics is one of the best cards in Zada, Hedron Grinder decks — cast it targeting Zada and it copies to every creature you control, turning a one-mana spell into a mass unblockable effect that draws you as many cards as you have creatures.

02
The Howling Abomination

The Howling Abomination

61.5% of decks · synergy 0.61

The Howling Abomination triggers on spells cast, so Renegade Tactics functions as a cheap cantrip that also enables an attack — the draw keeps the spell chain alive while the unblockable clause lets the Abomination connect for maximum chaos.

03

Urabrask

68.2% of decks · synergy 0.61

Urabrask rewards casting spells on opponents' turns, and Renegade Tactics is cheap enough to hold up at instant speed while threatening a blocked attack, making it a low-cost way to trigger Urabrask's punishment clause mid-combat.

04
Rionya, Fire Dancer

Rionya, Fire Dancer

58.2% of decks · synergy 0.51

Rionya, Fire Dancer generates creature tokens at end of combat based on instants and sorceries cast that turn, and Renegade Tactics slots in as a one-mana spell that cantrips while padding the spell count toward more Rionya copies.

05
Feather, the Redeemed

Feather, the Redeemed

29.0% of decks · synergy 0.27

Feather, the Redeemed returns targeting spells from the graveyard to hand, so Renegade Tactics becomes a permanent fixture — one mana per turn to draw a card and push a creature through blockers, indefinitely.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Renegade Tactics is legal across Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Pauper, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the only format where it's a real inclusion is Commander under specific commanders. In Pauper it's technically playable but too low-impact for a format where every card slot is contested. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, a one-mana cantrip that only grants unblockable has never been close to competitive. Commander is its home, and even there it belongs almost exclusively in Zada, Hedron Grinder builds where the copy effect turns it from a marginal trick into an engine piece.

Price Context

Current price

$0.31 bulk tier

At $0.31, Renegade Tactics is bulk — you're not paying for it, you're just tracking it down. The price reflects exactly how narrow the card is: high demand in one specific Commander deck keeps it from being a pure throw-in, but it will never climb out of the bulk bin.
