Reckless Embermage lets you ping any target for 1 damage at instant speed, but every activation deals 1 damage to you as well — a symmetry-breaking cost that demands a deck built to exploit it. Run it when your commander or game plan cares about repeated damage triggers, and cut it everywhere else.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Reckless Embermage actually gets work done — 100-card singleton makes the self-damage cost more manageable, and generals like Obosh, the Preypiercer or Toralf, God of Fury can turn the ping-yourself clause into a feature rather than a bug. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially invisible; there's no archetype that wants a slow, symmetrical pinger when more efficient burn exists. Oathbreaker offers a narrow slice of relevance in the same triggered-damage shells that Commander enables.
