Read the Bones
Sorcery
Scry 2, then draw two cards. You lose 2 life. (To scry 2, look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them on the bottom and the rest on top in any order.)

Read the Bones nets you two cards and lets you bin the third — real card selection, not just card draw — for three mana and two life. That's a fine price in black, and in a commander like Kardur, Doomscourge where every card in hand is a threat or a setup piece, that selection matters more than raw velocity.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Kardur, Doomscourge
Kardur, Doomscourge lives and dies by having the right piece at the right moment — a goad outlet, a sac trigger, a combat trick — and Read the Bones digs two deep to find it while sculpting the hand at instant-adjacent speed.

Tor Wauki the Younger
Tor Wauki the Younger wants a steady stream of instants and sorceries to ping with, and Read the Bones slots in as a cheap spell that refuels the hand and keeps the ping engine firing through the mid-game.

Rowan, Scion of War
Rowan, Scion of War reduces spell costs based on life paid, so the two life from Read the Bones is direct fuel — you're effectively paying for card selection twice, once with mana and once with the discount it buys on the next spell.

Phage the Untouchable
Phage the Untouchable decks have an unusually narrow tutor target and need to find specific combo pieces — Lich's Mirror, Torpor Orb — reliably, and Read the Bones provides cheap, efficient digging in a color that already leans on scry to control what it draws.

Horobi, Death's Wail
Horobi, Death's Wail decks want redundant ways to interact and reload without tapping out on counterable permanents, and Read the Bones delivers card selection as a non-permanent spell that doesn't accidentally hand an opponent a trigger.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Read the Bones earns its keep — 100-card singleton means you often need to dig for a specific answer or payoff, and the scry 2 before drawing makes it card selection rather than a blind draw spell. In Pauper it competes seriously as one of the better common draw spells black has access to, and the life payment is rarely punishing in that format's slower games. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer the bar for three-mana sorceries is simply too high — Thoughtseize, Consider, and format-native cantrips do more for less, so Read the Bones doesn't show up outside of niche budget or casual builds. Vintage has better options at every point on the curve, so its legality there is nominal.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Read the Bones is pure bulk — you'll find copies in any common box at your local store without blinking. That price is stable because the card sees steady Commander demand without any spike-worthy competitive relevance, so don't expect movement in either direction.
