Ravaging Blaze deals damage equal to your spell mastery count plus a base, and with spell mastery active it also hits players — that's a removal spell and a face-burn spell rolled into one conditional package. In dedicated spellslinger builds where Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh is already triggering off every instant and sorcery, the condition is almost always met, but outside those shells it's just a worse Lightning Bolt.

Commanders with the highest synergy
Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh
Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh rewards you for casting instants and sorceries, and Ravaging Blaze slots cleanly into that spell density — high enough to reliably hit spell mastery and threaten players, not just creatures, as early as the mid-game.

In Commander, Ravaging Blaze earns its slot only in heavy spellslinger decks where spell mastery is a near-certainty; the moment that condition is in doubt, scalable burn like Comet Storm does the job better. In Legacy and Vintage, the competition from Lightning Bolt and Searing Blaze is simply too stiff — paying two mana for conditional player damage doesn't clear the bar. Modern and Pioneer are similarly hostile; burn decks there demand efficiency that Ravaging Blaze can't guarantee. Oathbreaker is the one fringe case where a spell-heavy build might squeeze value out of it, but even there it's a fringe pick.

Price Context
Current price
$0.09 bulk tier
At $0.09, Ravaging Blaze is deep bulk — you're not paying for it, you're finding it in a trade binder. That price reflects its narrow playability accurately; don't expect it to appreciate unless a new commander makes spell mastery trivially reliable.
