Quest for the Gemblades puts +1/+1 counters on your creatures for free once you pay the one-time two-mana setup — remove six charge counters and drop two counters on any creature you control as a free activated ability. The catch is that filling it requires six separate instances of dealing noncombat damage, which is a real ask in most decks.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Quest for the Gemblades is a fringe role-player in dedicated +1/+1 counter decks — the payoff is real, but filling six charge counters in a format where you're one of four players and combats are irregular takes long enough that faster engines usually outpace it. In Legacy and Vintage it simply doesn't compete; the formats move too quickly for a two-mana enchantment that needs six triggers before it does anything. Modern is technically legal but Quest for the Gemblades has never been a Modern consideration — the same slot buys far more immediate effect. Commander is the only format where the card has a realistic home, and even there it earns a slot only if your deck generates noncombat damage consistently.

Price Context
Current price
$0.09 bulk tier
At $0.09, Quest for the Gemblades is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not demand. It's unlikely to appreciate unless a popular new counter-synergy commander spikes interest, so grab a copy for your deck without a second thought and don't expect the price to move.
