Pyre of Heroes card art
Pyre of Heroes is a Birthing Pod variant that locks you into a single creature type — and in tribal Commander decks, that restriction is almost never a cost. You sacrifice a creature to tutor the next rung up the mana ladder directly onto the battlefield; Orah, Skyclave Hierophant decks, for example, run it as a second copy of their primary engine.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Orah, Skyclave Hierophant

Orah, Skyclave Hierophant

62.8% of decks · synergy 0.62

Orah, Skyclave Hierophant runs an all-Cleric creature base almost by definition, so Pyre of Heroes slots in as a redundant Pod effect that lets the deck chain through its Cleric toolbox even when Orah is offline or taxed.

02
Dargo, the ShipwreckerTymna the Weaver

Dargo, the Shipwrecker // Tymna the Weaver

38.5% of decks · synergy 0.38

Dargo, the Shipwrecker // Tymna the Weaver uses Pyre of Heroes as a cheap sacrifice outlet that doubles as a tutor — Dargo's own cost reduction means you're frequently sacrificing expendable creatures anyway, and Pyre converts that into a threat upgrade.

Commander is where Pyre of Heroes lives — tribal decks are dense enough to always find a legal sacrifice target and a legal tutor target, and the four-mana activation is acceptable in a 40-life format where setting up a chain over multiple turns is viable. In Modern and Pioneer, the tribal requirement is a hard constraint that limits it to dedicated tribal shells, and even there the sorcery speed and tap clause make it slower than the formats generally tolerate. Legacy and Vintage have access to Birthing Pod itself and faster toolbox engines, so Pyre of Heroes rarely competes. The short version: this is a Commander card that happens to be legal elsewhere.

Price Context

Current price

$2.85 cheap tier

At $2.85, Pyre of Heroes sits at a fair price for a role-player that sees meaningful play only in tribal Commander decks — it's cheap enough to throw into any eligible build without hesitation. Demand is real but narrow, so the price is unlikely to spike dramatically unless a breakout tribal commander pushes it into broader adoption.
