Putrefaction is a slow-burn enchantment that taxes every creature spell your opponents cast, turning the table's collective card advantage into a grinding disadvantage for anyone going wide or tall with creatures. The cost — four mana at sorcery speed with no immediate effect — means it does nothing the turn it lands, and any enchantment removal erases the investment entirely.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Putrefaction has any real home, and even there it's a niche include — multiplayer tables mean three opponents triggering the discard clause, which can generate genuine attrition against creature-heavy pods. Outside of enchantress builds or Grixis/Jund control shells that want to strip hands over a long game, it competes poorly with more immediate discard and removal options. Legacy and Vintage are legal but irrelevant — the format speeds make a four-mana do-nothing enchantment unplayable. Oathbreaker is legal and the compressed game length makes Putrefaction even softer than it is in Commander.

Price Context
Current price
$0.26 bulk tier
At $0.26, Putrefaction is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. It won't appreciate; demand is low and supply is plentiful, so pick it up if a specific deck calls for it and don't think twice about the cost.
