Prey Upon card art
Prey Upon is a one-mana fight spell that trades your biggest creature into whatever is threatening you, and it does that job cleanly and cheaply. It shines hardest in decks like Maarika, Brutal Gladiator where forced fighting is the entire gameplan — anywhere else, it's a serviceable budget removal piece with zero splash damage.

Maarika, Brutal Gladiator

Maarika, Brutal Gladiator

32.4% of decks · synergy 0.31

Maarika, Brutal Gladiator triggers on any creature fighting, making Prey Upon a one-mana engine piece that simultaneously removes a threat and stacks counters — it's one of the most redundant, on-theme slots in the deck.

02
Neyith of the Dire Hunt

Neyith of the Dire Hunt

30.6% of decks · synergy 0.29

Neyith of the Dire Hunt draws a card whenever one of your creatures fights, so Prey Upon becomes a one-mana removal spell that replaces itself — exactly the kind of efficiency Neyith lists want.

03
Legolas, Master Archer

Legolas, Master Archer

22.0% of decks · synergy 0.19

Legolas, Master Archer pings creatures when you cast spells that target them, and Prey Upon targets your own creature to initiate the fight, turning a cheap removal spell into a two-for-one sequence.

In Commander, Prey Upon earns its slot only in dedicated fight-synergy builds — outside of those, one mana for a sorcery-speed fight that requires a healthy creature of your own is too conditional against three opponents running instant-speed interaction. Pauper is where it sees the most competitive daylight, filling a removal role in green creature decks that lack access to efficient kill spells at common. In Modern and Pioneer it's outclassed by fight spells with upside — Snakeskin Veil protection, Inscription of Abundance flexibility, or Pit Fight's instant speed — so it rarely makes the cut. Legacy and Vintage don't want it at all.
