Plated Rootwalla is a free 2/2 with upside whenever you're discarding cards — the zero madness cost is the whole point, and the built-in pump ability means it can trade up in combat. Outside of discard-matters or madness shells, it's a below-rate vanilla that belongs in the bulk bin.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Plated Rootwalla is a Pauper staple in madness and Wonder-enabling strategies, where pitching it to a Faithless Looting or Wild Mongrel for zero mana is a genuine tempo swing. In Legacy, that same axis exists but the competition for discard-outlet synergy slots is fierce enough that Rootwalla earns its spot only in dedicated Madness aggro lists. Commander is the format where it gets complicated — free spells are powerful in theory, but EDH games go long and a 2/2 with a mana-sink pump rarely closes anything, so it only belongs in decks built around Anje Falkenrath or similar commanders who weaponize the discard step. Vintage is technically legal but this card has no business there.

$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Plated Rootwalla is deep bulk — you're not buying it for value, you're grabbing a playset out of a common box for less than a pack of gum. Bulk commons this format-specific don't spike; buy exactly as many as your Pauper or Commander list needs and move on.
