Planar Guide resets the entire creature board — yours and everyone else's — by exiling all creatures and returning them to play simultaneously, triggering every enters-the-battlefield ability in the room. The cost is real: four mana, tap, and a full turn of patience before the ability fires.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Planar Guide is a Commander card first and almost exclusively. The delayed board reset is too slow and symmetrical for Legacy or Vintage, where the game is typically decided before you untap with the trigger. In Commander, the four-player dynamic changes the calculus: symmetrical effects that abuse ETBs are stronger when you've built around them and your opponents haven't, and the one-turn delay is easier to protect in a multiplayer game where you can discourage attacks. Oathbreaker is the only other legal format where it sees any real consideration, and even there it's a niche pick for planeswalkers that benefit from creatures re-entering. Planar Guide belongs in Commander ETB decks and essentially nowhere else.

Price Context
Current price
$1.24 cheap tier
At $1.24, Planar Guide sits in cheap territory — a negligible buy-in for the effect it provides in the right shell. The price reflects its narrow audience: it's not a staple, but it won't get cheaper, and it's been on a single printing for decades.
