Phyrexian Colossus card art
Phyrexian Colossus hits the table as an 8/8 indestructible trampler — a wall that ends combat conversations — but the cost to attack with it, tapping eight other permanents, is so prohibitive that most decks can't meet it reliably. The exception is Rowan, Scion of War and similar life-payment shells, where the Colossus earns its keep not by swinging but by feeding discount engines.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Phyrexian Colossus is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it's essentially a Commander card — the singleton format is the only place where its niche attack restriction gets papered over by synergy commanders or life-payment shells. In Legacy and Vintage, an 8/8 indestructible body at eight mana competes against formats that win on turns one through three; Phyrexian Colossus never sees play there. Modern is similarly hostile — eight mana is a game-ending investment in a format with Solitude and Fatal Push, and indestructible doesn't protect against exile. In Commander, the card finds its home in decks that either cheat on its mana cost or simply want a roadblock that nothing short of exile can answer.

Price Context

Current price

$0.23 bulk tier

At $0.23, Phyrexian Colossus is pure bulk — easy to pick up and easy to cut without regret. Given its narrow application, there's no reason to expect the price to move; it's a niche card in a format full of cheaper, more flexible threats.
