Phantasmal Dreadmaw card art
Phantasmal Dreadmaw drops a 6/6 trampler for two mana — the catch being it dies to any targeting effect aimed at it. In Minn, Wily Illusionist decks, that fragility is the feature, not the bug: Minn, Wily Illusionist turns the death trigger into a free Illusion from your library, making Phantasmal Dreadmaw one of the most efficient engine pieces in the archetype.

38.1% of decks · synergy 0.37

Minn, Wily Illusionist appears in 38% of decks running Phantasmal Dreadmaw for an obvious reason — Minn converts every Illusion death into a library dig, and Phantasmal Dreadmaw is the cheapest way to put a massive Illusion on the board and dare opponents to shoot it.

Phantasmal Dreadmaw is a Commander card through and through — the Illusion tribal payoffs that make its drawback worthwhile simply don't exist in other formats. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage it's a 6/6 for two that folds to any removal spell, which is not a trade any competitive deck wants to make. Pauper has the same problem at common rarity: raw stats don't compensate for a built-in kill switch when there's no payoff attached. Stick to Commander, specifically Illusion-matters builds, where the death trigger is the whole point.

At $0.12, Phantasmal Dreadmaw is deep bulk — you're stuffing this into a deck envelope, not tracking its price. Bulk commons and uncommons at this tier don't appreciate, so buy as many copies as you need without a second thought.
