Petrified Plating gives a creature +1/+1 for each Forest you control — a number that scales hard in dedicated green landfall or land-matters builds but lands at zero impact in non-green or low-Forest shells. At two mana to equip onto a commander that wants to attack repeatedly, the ceiling is real, but the card does nothing the turn you cast it and falls apart outside its narrow home.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Petrified Plating is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but competitive non-rotating formats ignore it entirely — Legacy and Vintage have no interest in a scaling equipment that requires Forest density to pay off, and Modern has cleaner pump options at the same cost. Pauper is the one competitive context where it could theoretically appear, but mono-green beatdown decks there prefer unconditional buffs over a land-count dependency. Commander is the real home: games go long enough to accumulate Forests, and a Selvala, Heart of the Wilds or Kodama of the East Tree build can turn Petrified Plating into a legitimate threat multiplier attached to a recursive commander.

$0.09 bulk tier
At $0.09, Petrified Plating is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. It won't hold or gain value, but it doesn't need to; if the effect fits your Forest-heavy Commander deck, the cost to find out is negligible.
