Path of Mettle // Metzali, Tower of Triumph card art
Path of Mettle // Metzali, Tower of Triumph flips into a repeatable damage dealer and life-drain engine on the back side — but it demands a creature suite of first strikers, double strikers, vigilant, or haste creatures just to survive the trigger that flips it. The front side is a real cost, and in any deck not already stacking those keywords, it's a two-mana enchantment that does nothing.

In Commander, Path of Mettle // Metzali, Tower of Triumph finds its home in aggressive Boros decks that already want first strike and double strike creatures — Aurelia, the Warleader and Isshin, Two Heavens as One shells are the natural fits, since their creature suites flip it almost incidentally. Metzali's activated abilities are genuinely powerful at the table: random discard against a single opponent and two damage plus two life on demand are both relevant forms of pressure in a 40-life format. In 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, the setup cost is too steep — aggressive decks don't want to spend two mana on an enchantment that might not flip until turn three or four, and control decks have no use for it at all. Legacy and Vintage have better options at every step. Commander is where Path of Mettle // Metzali, Tower of Triumph actually earns its slot.
