Oath of the Grey Host card art
Oath of the Grey Host lands as a persistent token engine and saga payoff engine in one card — every Saga you control triggers drain life equal to its lore counters, and you get a 1/1 Spirit token with lifelink every time one completes. The cost is a five-mana enchantment that does nothing the turn it enters; Narci, Fable Singer is the commander that makes that tempo hit worth eating.

Narci, Fable Singer drains opponents whenever a Saga completes, and Oath of the Grey Host stacks a second drain trigger on top of that while also producing a blocker — every finished Saga becomes a life-swing and a body, which is exactly the engine Narci wants to accelerate a kill.

Oath of the Grey Host is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its real home is Commander — a 100-card singleton format with long games gives the drain triggers and token accumulation room to matter. In Legacy and Vintage, five mana for a slow enchantment is simply too clunky against the pace of those formats, and the Saga density needed to make Oath of the Grey Host pay off doesn't exist in those environments. Modern Saga shells are plausible but fringe; the card asks you to build around it, and Modern has more efficient payoffs for that investment. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander 60-card variant worth considering, since the format's singleton Saga commanders can hit the same density.

Price Context

Current price

$0.28 bulk tier

At $0.28, Oath of the Grey Host sits firmly in bulk territory — a negligible pickup for any Saga-heavy Commander deck. Bulk enchantments with narrow commander-specific appeal tend to stay cheap, so don't expect this to move unless a high-profile Saga commander pushes it into wider circulation.
