Nevermore locks a named nonland card out of the game entirely — no casting, full stop — for three mana at sorcery speed. That's a strong effect, and in Commander it doubles as a commander-blanking tool that costs less than most alternatives.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Nevermore is most potent as a surgical answer to problem commanders or known combo pieces — naming a Thassa's Oracle or a Dramatic Reversal before it resolves can dismantle an entire game plan for three mana. Legacy and Vintage see it as a sideboard option against combo decks, though Leyline of the Void and Meddling Mage compete in that space with more efficiency or board presence. Modern has largely passed it by — three mana for a conditional lock is too slow in a format that kills on turn four. Oathbreaker is arguably Nevermore's second-best home, where the signature spell is a fixed target and blanking it for the whole game is often backbreaking.

Price Context
Current price
$0.66 bulk tier
At $0.66, Nevermore sits firmly in bulk rare territory, which undersells how frequently it shows up in Commander hate packages. The price is stable — it's been reprinted enough to keep supply high, so don't expect it to spike, but at under a dollar it's an easy include whenever you need targeted disruption.
