Nether Spirit is a free recurring threat that returns itself from the graveyard every upkeep as long as it's the only creature there — the condition is strict, but in the right shell it's an unkillable two-power flier for two mana. Build around the restriction and it's excellent; ignore it and it's a vanilla 2/2 that sits in your graveyard.

In Commander, Nether Spirit fits narrow but real homes — graveyard-light control builds and commanders that deliberately keep the creature count low, like Zur the Enchanter or enchantment-based stax shells where the board rarely has creatures to clutter the yard. Legacy is where Nether Spirit earned its reputation, anchoring reanimator-adjacent control lists that could guarantee the lonely-graveyard condition through Fact or Fiction piles and selective discard. Modern has better recursive threats at this rate, so Nether Spirit doesn't see play there in any meaningful way. Vintage is technically legal but entirely irrelevant given the competition.

Price Context
Current price
$4.83 cheap tier
At $4.83, Nether Spirit sits at the low end of niche-staple pricing — cheap enough to pick up on spec for the right deck, and the older printings keep supply limited enough that it hasn't cratered. It's not a card you'll regret buying at this price for a dedicated shell.
