Mystic Compass lets you tap two mana to change a land's type until end of turn — a narrow, repeatable effect that almost never justifies the slot. Outside of decks that specifically exploit basic land types for landfall triggers or color-fixing tricks, it's outclassed by permanents that do the same thing for free and forever.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Mystic Compass is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the effect — temporarily changing a land's type — is too situational and too mana-intensive to earn a slot in most 99s; decks that care about land types want permanent changers like Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or Blood Moon effects, not a two-mana-per-activation artifact. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more powerful land-type manipulation and would never touch Mystic Compass. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander at a smaller scale.

Price Context
Current price
$0.34 bulk tier
At $0.34, Mystic Compass sits firmly in bulk territory, which accurately reflects its demand. Don't expect that price to move — cards with no competitive application and narrow Commander use tend to stay on the floor indefinitely.
