Murmuration puts a Bird token into play for each Bird you already control — at instant speed — which means it scales from embarrassing to game-ending depending on your board state. Kastral, the Windcrested decks are the primary destination, and in that shell it routinely makes ten or more tokens in a single cast.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Kastral, the Windcrested
Kastral, the Windcrested is a Bird tribal commander, so Murmuration is doing exactly what the deck was built for — a wide flock means a massive token burst, and the instant speed lets you convert an attack step or a combat trick into a board that's suddenly twice the size.

Choco, Seeker of Paradise
Choco, Seeker of Paradise cares about going wide with creature tokens, and Murmuration delivers a wave of Bodies proportional to however many Birds are already in play — the synergy rate above 70% reflects how reliably that payoff lands.

Zinnia, Valley's Voice
Zinnia, Valley's Voice rewards token production and anthems, so Murmuration slots in as a burst-refill tool that keeps the flock threatening after a board wipe or a bad combat.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Murmuration is a Commander card through and through — the payoff is proportional to how many Birds you've already assembled, and only a 100-card singleton format gives you the redundancy and the game length to make that math consistently favorable. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but Bird tribal doesn't exist as a competitive archetype, so it will never see meaningful play there. Oathbreaker is the one fringe case where a Bird-focused build could deploy it, but Commander is where Murmuration actually does its job.

Price Context
Current price
$0.42 bulk tier
At $0.42, Murmuration sits firmly in bulk territory, which is exactly right for a narrow tribal instant with no competitive demand outside Commander. It's unlikely to spike without a pushed Bird commander printing, so grab it cheaply and don't expect the price to move.
