Mountain Stronghold
Land
Red legendary creatures you control have "bands with other legendary creatures." (Any legendary creatures can attack in a band as long as at least one has "bands with other legendary creatures." Bands are blocked as a group. If at least two legendary creatures you control, one of which has "bands with other legendary creatures," are blocking or being blocked by the same creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Mountain Stronghold gives all your Mountains mountainwalk, turning a basic land type most opponents ignore into a free evasion engine for your entire attacking team. The catch is the three-mana activation — meaningful in the mid-game, punishing if you tap out early.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Mountain Stronghold is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and that's essentially the whole story — it's not legal in Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or Pauper. In Commander, where red-heavy decks and mono-red mountains are common, Mountain Stronghold finds its best home: opponents running Stomping Ground, Sacred Foundry, or basic Mountains are free damage waiting to happen. Legacy and Vintage see it only in the most dedicated mountainwalk shells, which don't meaningfully exist at those power levels. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's logic at a smaller scale.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Mountain Stronghold occupies a niche narrow enough that direct replacements are scarce — the closest analogue is Goblin War Drums or Trailblazer's Boots for guaranteed evasion, though neither leverages land types the way Mountain Stronghold does. If the goal is simply evasion rather than mountainwalk specifically, Whispersilk Cloak and Hot Soup both cost under $1 and attach to any single attacker, trading the board-wide effect for reliability.
Price Context
Current price
$7.28 mid tier
At $7.28, Mountain Stronghold sits in mid-tier territory for a niche utility land — notable for an older card with a narrow application. Its price reflects low reprint history more than demand, so it holds value steadily but don't expect it to climb.
