Moltensteel Dragon card art
Moltensteel Dragon converts life into a one-shot kill — pay enough Phyrexian mana activations and it hits for lethal out of nowhere. The real home is Scion of the Ur-Dragon, where copying it mid-combat turns a single attack into a commander-damage execution.

Format Analysis

Commander is the only format where Moltensteel Dragon is genuinely dangerous — starting at 40 life gives you a deep reservoir of Phyrexian mana activations to fund a lethal pump, and the Scion of the Ur-Dragon combo is a known kill condition in competitive dragon piles. In Legacy and Vintage it's a six-mana 4/4 flying firebreathing dragon competing against formats that end games on turns one through three, so it doesn't see play. Modern is similarly hostile — the mana cost and lack of immediate impact make it unplayable in any serious list. Oathbreaker is legal but shares the same logic as Commander: worth consideration in a dragon-centric shell, irrelevant elsewhere.

Price Context

Current price

$0.50 bulk tier

At $0.50, Moltensteel Dragon sits firmly in bulk rare territory and is unlikely to climb without a reprint ban or sudden spike in Scion of the Ur-Dragon popularity. It's a low-risk pickup for any dragon pile — the floor is already the floor.
