Mask of Memory card art
Mask of Memory turns any combat-damage trigger into two fresh cards and a discard, all for two mana to equip onto whatever creature is already getting through. At one mana to cast and two to equip, it's one of the cheapest repeatable draw engines in the format — Slicer, Hired Muscle alone runs it in nearly three-quarters of all builds.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01

Slicer, Hired Muscle

74.4% of decks · synergy 0.68

Slicer, Hired Muscle deals combat damage to opponents on their own turns, which means Mask of Memory can trigger on turns you don't even attack — the card draw is essentially free riding on damage Slicer was already dealing.

02
Squall, SeeD Mercenary

Squall, SeeD Mercenary

52.7% of decks · synergy 0.51

Squall, SeeD Mercenary cares about loading up one creature and pushing through damage, so Mask of Memory slots in as both a payoff and a refuel engine on the same equipment slot.

03
Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos

Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos

56.0% of decks · synergy 0.50

Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos rewards aggressive combat, and Mask of Memory keeps the hand full to sustain that pressure — the discard clause is a minor cost when you're already drawing two per swing.

04
Ardenn, Intrepid ArchaeologistRograkh, Son of Rohgahh

Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist // Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh

49.8% of decks · synergy 0.42

Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist // Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh can redistribute Mask of Memory for free at the start of combat, letting you shift the draw trigger to whichever creature is best positioned to connect each turn.

05
Valduk, Keeper of the Flame

Valduk, Keeper of the Flame

45.0% of decks · synergy 0.39

Valduk, Keeper of the Flame generates tokens for each equipment attached to him, so Mask of Memory does double duty — it adds to the token count while keeping cards flowing every time those tokens (or Valduk himself) get through.

oathbreaker

Commander is where Mask of Memory earns its keep — 100-card singleton formats reward cheap, repeatable draw, and two cards per combat damage trigger compounds fast over a long game. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant; those formats move too fast for a two-mana equip cost to matter when Skullclamp does a better job for one mana and doesn't require the creature to connect. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: slower, grindier games where Mask of Memory can fire repeatedly before anyone answers it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.41 bulk tier

At $0.41, Mask of Memory is pure bulk — easy to pick up in any trade binder or as a throw-in. That price has stayed flat for years and will continue to, since the card sees no competitive play; you're buying it for Commander value, not financial upside.
