Marked by Honor puts +2/+2 and vigilance on a creature for three mana — a reasonable stat bump, but it's an Aura, which means it eats removal twice and leaves you down a card when it does. Outside of dedicated Aura synergy shells, there are faster, more resilient ways to pump a creature.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Marked by Honor is legal across every major format but sees almost no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, it occasionally appears in Aura-focused decks under commanders like Siona, Captain of the Pyleas or Tiana, Ship's Caretaker, where the enchantment subtype does actual work beyond the stat line. In Pauper, common-legal Aura decks exist and Marked by Honor is on the bubble — the vigilance clause matters more there when you're suiting up a single threat and need it to attack and block. Everywhere else, three mana for a non-protective Aura is simply too slow to justify the card disadvantage risk.
