Mark of the Oni steals a creature at enchantment speed and keeps it locked down for as long as you have a Demon on the battlefield — that's a repeatable, persistent theft effect stapled to a one-mana Aura. The catch is the Demon dependency: lose your Demon and you lose the hostage, which makes it a liability in removal-heavy pods.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Mark of the Oni earns its slot only in Demon-tribal or Demon-adjacent builds — outside that context, the conditional theft is too fragile against the removal density of a four-player table. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but far too slow and parasitic to see play in formats defined by turn-one and turn-two threats. Modern has the same problem: one mana is the right cost, but the Demon clause makes it unplayable outside a dedicated shell that doesn't exist competitively. Oathbreaker could theoretically support it in a black Demon shell, but the smaller deck size and faster games make the fragility more punishing.

$0.28 bulk tier
At $0.28, Mark of the Oni is deep bulk — pick it up freely from any binder or bulk bin. Demon tribal is niche enough that demand will never push this above a dollar, so there's no urgency either way.
