Mandibular Kite card art
Mandibular Kite is a zero-equip-cost Equipment that gives a creature flying and lifelink, and its real value is the death trigger — when the equipped creature dies, Mandibular Kite returns to hand, letting you re-equip for free and loop the effect. The cost is that you need a creature dying repeatedly to extract full value, which makes it mediocre in a vacuum but genuinely dangerous alongside Salvaging Station or in a Sephiroth, Fallen Hero shell that wants creatures in the graveyard.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Sephiroth, Fallen Hero

Sephiroth, Fallen Hero

43.3% of decks · synergy 0.42

Sephiroth, Fallen Hero actively rewards putting creatures in the graveyard to load up his counters, and Mandibular Kite fits cleanly into that loop — equip for free, let the creature die to fuel Sephiroth's conditions, and return Mandibular Kite to hand to do it again.

02
Nahiri, Forged in Fury

Nahiri, Forged in Fury

32.6% of decks · synergy 0.31

Nahiri, Forged in Fury cares about equipping creatures at flash speed and attacking, so Mandibular Kite's zero equip cost lets you freely attach it mid-combat or after a block without spending mana; the flying it grants also matters for connecting with Nahiri's attack triggers.

03
Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain

Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain

14.8% of decks · synergy 0.14

Arna Kennerüd, Skycaptain copies Auras and Equipment onto other creatures when they attack, meaning Mandibular Kite's flying and lifelink can spread across an entire swinging board; the free equip cost makes it trivial to keep in play and multiplied.

Mandibular Kite is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker — the only formats where it's absent are Standard and Pioneer, where it simply hasn't been printed. In Pauper it's a common, and zero-equip-cost Equipment with a built-in recursion loop is legitimately playable in aggressive or sacrifice strategies there. In Commander it's a role-player rather than a staple — narrow enough that it only earns a slot in decks that specifically want the graveyard recursion or free equip synergy. Legacy and Vintage have so many stronger options that Mandibular Kite won't see meaningful play outside of curio builds.

Price Context

Current price

$0.23 bulk tier

At $0.23, Mandibular Kite is firmly bulk — pick it up without a second thought if it fits your deck. Bulk Equipment with niche combo applications rarely spikes unless a new commander pushes the archetype hard, so don't expect significant price movement.
