Mammoth Umbra card art
Mammoth Umbra puts a +1/+1 counter and a totem armor shield on any creature for five mana — the shield alone justifies it in commander-centric decks where losing your general is a tempo disaster. Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor decks run it at a 34% rate because protecting the engine is the whole game plan.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor

Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor

33.8% of decks · synergy 0.33

Pearl-Ear, Imperial Advisor lives and dies on staying in play to chain advisor triggers, and Mammoth Umbra replaces a board wipe's destroy effect with a mere counter removal — exactly the insurance a fragile value engine needs.

02
Killian, Ink Duelist

Killian, Ink Duelist

22.4% of decks · synergy 0.22

Killian, Ink Duelist halves the cost of auras, which drops Mammoth Umbra to three mana and makes totem armor on a menace commander trivially efficient.

03
Bruna, Light of Alabaster

Bruna, Light of Alabaster

12.4% of decks · synergy 0.12

Bruna, Light of Alabaster attacks and pulls auras directly from the graveyard onto herself, so Mammoth Umbra functions as a reusable shield that resets every combat step she connects.

In Commander, Mammoth Umbra earns its slot in Voltron and commander-protection shells specifically because totem armor turns a lethal board wipe into a minor setback. Outside Commander, the five-mana cost is the ceiling — Pauper is where it sees the most competitive light, slotting into Bogles-style hexproof aura decks as a late power boost with built-in resilience. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but ignore it; the mana cost is simply too high when cheaper auras dominate those formats. Modern has better options at every point on the curve, so Mammoth Umbra is effectively a Commander-and-Pauper card.
