In Commander, Makeshift Binding occupies the middle tier of white removal — it hits any nonland permanent including problematic enchantments and planeswalkers, which narrows the gap against premium options like Swords to Plowshares. The life drain is irrelevant in most pods but occasionally matters when you're closing out a weakened opponent. In Pauper it's a legitimate staple, where unconditional exile at common is genuinely scarce and the life loss adds up over a long game. Everywhere else — Modern, Pioneer, Standard — six mana is a steep ask when faster, cheaper interaction exists.
