Maddening Hex attaches to an opponent and rolls a die every time they cast a spell — each roll deals damage equal to the result, and the counter on the Hex grows, so late-game rolls hit harder. The catch is that the Hex transfers when the counters hit six, making it a ticking clock you need to manage. In Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor decks, that transfer mechanic is a feature, not a bug.

Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor
Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor turns curse transfers into card advantage, and Maddening Hex is one of the few curses that transfers on its own — stack counters, let it bounce, draw cards, repeat.

Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor
Wyll, Blade of Frontiers // Sword Coast Sailor triggers off dice rolls, and Maddening Hex generates one every time the hexed opponent casts a spell — in an active game, that's free Wyll triggers without spending any additional resources.

Mr. House, President and CEO
Mr. House, President and CEO rewards dice rolling at scale, and Maddening Hex puts that engine on autopilot by rolling whenever an opponent casts, layering value onto every spell at the table.

Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients
Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients pops off a Dragon Spirit token whenever it takes non-combat damage, and Maddening Hex can redirect that die-roll damage to Vrondiss to trigger the ability repeatedly as opponents keep casting spells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Maddening Hex is a Commander card through and through — the multiplayer table means the hexed opponent is casting spells constantly, so the die rolls stack up fast and the counter climbs toward six in just a few turns. In a duel, the trigger frequency drops sharply and the card loses most of its pressure. It's technically legal in Legacy and Vintage, but those formats move too fast and too lethally for a three-mana enchantment that deals incremental damage to matter. Oathbreaker can support it in the right shell, particularly with a planeswalker that cares about dice or curses, but Commander is where Maddening Hex does its best work.

Price Context
Current price
$4.88 cheap tier
At $4.88, Maddening Hex sits in the cheap tier — easy to slot in without a second thought. It's a niche card with a ceiling defined almost entirely by Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor and dice-roll commanders, so don't expect the price to move much outside a reprint or a breakout new commander in those themes.
