Long-Range Sensor lets you look at the top card of your library at any time and cast spells from the top — free card advantage bolted onto a cheap artifact that Inspirit, Flagship Vessel turns into a full engine. The cost is low enough that running it is almost never wrong in the decks that want it.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
Inspirit, Flagship Vessel runs Long-Range Sensor in nearly two-thirds of its builds because the sensor's top-of-library access pairs directly with the ship's crew triggers, letting you chain plays off the top rather than burning through hand cards.

Kilo, Apogee Mind
Kilo, Apogee Mind cares about casting spells from unusual zones, and Long-Range Sensor turns the top of your library into a live resource that Kilo can exploit every turn.

Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival
Pia Nalaar, Consul of Revival generates artifacts and wants ways to keep the gas flowing, so Long-Range Sensor fills the role of soft card advantage without eating a slot better used for payoffs.

Laelia, the Blade Reforged
Laelia, the Blade Reforged exiles cards from the top frequently, and Long-Range Sensor lets you see what you're about to lose so you can decide whether to cast it first — a small edge that adds up over a long game.

Wulfgar of Icewind Dale
Wulfgar of Icewind Dale is an attack-trigger deck that needs to keep finding action, and Long-Range Sensor provides the steady top-card visibility that prevents awkward stalls between combat steps.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Long-Range Sensor is a Commander card through and through — the incremental, persistent value it generates only compounds in a long multiplayer game where you're drawing one card a turn and every bit of library visibility matters. In Legacy and Vintage, where games end too fast for a three-mana do-nothing artifact to pay off, Long-Range Sensor never sees play. Oathbreaker is the one other format worth mentioning: the compressed game length is still a challenge, but lower-power Oathbreaker pods resemble Commander enough that the card can pull weight in the right shell.

Price Context
Current price
$0.27 bulk tier
At $0.27, Long-Range Sensor is deep bulk — pick it up without thinking twice if even one deck you own wants it. Bulk rares in niche synergy roles rarely climb unless a breakout commander pushes demand, so treat it as a low-cost slot-filler rather than a spec.
