Lifeblood nets you 2 life every time a land enters the battlefield under your control — modest per trigger, but in a landfall deck it compounds fast enough to matter. It's a fringe inclusion: worth running in dedicated life-gain or landfall shells, dead weight everywhere else.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only home where Lifeblood earns its slot — 40 life means 2-life increments are marginal, but dedicated landfall and life-gain commanders turn repetition into real advantage. In Legacy and Vintage, it's legal but completely unplayable; those formats move too fast for a static enchantment that gains 2 life per land drop to register. Oathbreaker is legal as well, and the same landfall-commander logic applies on a smaller scale, though the faster pace of 20-life games makes Lifeblood slightly more impactful per trigger.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Retreat to Kazandu does much of what Lifeblood does — it gains 2 life per landfall trigger — and costs under $0.50 while adding the flexibility of a +1/+1 counter mode. If the life-gain role is the priority, Soul Warden and similar creature-based gainers are cheaper and harder to remove, though they don't key off lands specifically the way Lifeblood does.
Price Context
Current price
$21.67 premium tier
At $21.67, Lifeblood sits in premium territory almost entirely due to its age and low reprint history, not its power level. The effect doesn't justify the price in most builds — spend there only if you're deep into a dedicated landfall life-gain strategy and the budget alternatives don't satisfy.
