Lavamancer's Skill card art
Lavamancer's Skill turns any creature with tap into a repeatable ping engine — attach it to a creature with an untap outlet and you're dealing 2 damage per activation without ever casting a spell. Thornbite Staff does similar work but untaps automatically on death; Lavamancer's Skill demands you supply the untap yourself, which is the entire cost of admission.

In Commander, Lavamancer's Skill is a niche piece in dedicated tap-effect builds — it asks for an untap engine to shine, but in the right shell it can machine-gun a table's worth of small creatures off the board. Pauper is actually its most competitive home, where the card pool is shallow enough that repeatable pinging on a common aura clears meaningful threats. Legacy and Vintage allow it but ignore it — the formats move too fast for a two-mana setup piece with no immediate impact. Lavamancer's Skill is effectively a Commander and Pauper card, full stop.

Price Context

Current price

$0.17 bulk tier

At $0.17, Lavamancer's Skill is pure bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card with a real role in the right deck. That price is stable; demand is narrow enough that there's no spike risk, and it's not scarce enough for buyout pressure.
