Korvold, Fae-Cursed King enters as a 4/4 and immediately starts growing — every sacrifice makes him bigger and replaces itself with a card, turning any token fodder or expendable permanent into a draw engine stapled to a threat. The cost is that he wants a dedicated sacrifice infrastructure around him; without it, you're paying five mana for a vanilla beater. Shells running Animation Module or Hearthhull, the Worldseed give him exactly the free sacrifice triggers he needs to spiral out of control.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Hearthhull, the Worldseed
Hearthhull, the Worldseed runs Korvold, Fae-Cursed King because its token and land-sacrifice engine generates the constant stream of expendable permanents Korvold needs to keep growing and drawing — the two cards form a self-sustaining loop of resource generation.

Szarel, Genesis Shepherd
Szarel, Genesis Shepherd pairs with Korvold, Fae-Cursed King because its graveyard recursion and creature sacrifice synergies feed Korvold's hunger for repeated sacrifice triggers while recouping the card advantage lost to the bin.

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
Prossh, Skyraider of Kher is the most natural fit — it enters producing six Kobold tokens purpose-built to be sacrificed, and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King turns each of those free tokens into a +1/+1 counter and a card draw.

Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire
Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire forces everyone to sacrifice permanents on attack, and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King converts each of those forced sacrifices into counters and cards, rewarding the chaos Vaevictis generates.

Vazi, Keen Negotiator
Vazi, Keen Negotiator distributes Treasure tokens to opponents, and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King can sacrifice its own Treasures to fuel draws and growth — the political gifting of Vazi translates into pure selfish advantage for Korvold.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is built to live — five-mana dragons are acceptable in a 40-life format, and the 100-card singleton environment gives him abundant sacrifice fodder across tokens, clues, Treasures, and lands. In Legacy and Vintage he's technically legal but has no real home; five mana is too slow and too fragile for those formats, and his payoff requires setup that those formats punish. Modern and Pioneer allow him, but again the mana investment puts him behind the curve against faster threats. Oathbreaker could theoretically support him in a sacrifice shell, but the smaller life totals and lower card counts shrink the window for his engine to take over.
